Timber Windows in West Sussex

Salt. That’s the word that should be in the back of your mind if you’re buying windows for a coastal West Sussex property. Salt-laden air coming off the Channel finds every weakness in a window’s finish system — every gap in the paint film, every piece of cheap hardware. Inland properties around the South Downs face different challenges — driving rain, elevation, temperature swings — but they’re manageable with the right timber and glazing. Coastal salt is the real test.
We manufacture timber windows designed to handle both coastal and inland conditions. Pine, our meranti timber guide, or oak — each frame factory-finished with our microporous paint system and delivered across the county. You arrange your own installation.
Coast vs South Downs — Two Different Window Challenges

The coastal strip — Worthing, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton, Selsey — faces salt-laden onshore winds. The paint system is everything here. Sodium chloride crystals are hygroscopic — they absorb moisture from the air and hold it against the paint surface. Over time, this constant moisture contact breaks down the paint bond. Our factory-applied microporous system (three coats, ~120 microns dry film thickness) resists this far better than conventional gloss.
The South Downs — Petworth, Midhurst, Arundel — sit at elevation with driving rain exposure. Engineered timber construction handles the moisture fluctuations better than solid timber (finger-jointed sections constrain seasonal movement to under 1mm). Triple glazing is worth considering for exposed hilltop positions.
Hardware matters on the coast. Zinc-plated fittings corrode within 2-3 years in a salt environment. Specify stainless steel or brass.

Chichester
The cathedral city has multiple conservation areas — the Pallant Quarter, the city centre, Bosham harbour. Chichester District Council manages planning. Georgian and early Victorian sash windows dominate the historic core. The Pallant has some of the finest Georgian townhouses in southern England.
Worthing and the Coastal Towns
Victorian and Edwardian seafront properties. Sash windows with salt-resistant specifications. Chichester DC (for western coastal towns) and Arun DC (for Littlehampton, Bognor) handle planning.
Horsham and the Weald
Horsham District Council area. The town has its own conservation area. Surrounding villages — Steyning, Storrington, Henfield — are rural with mixed period stock.
Crawley
Post-war new town with predominantly modern housing. Flush casement windows. Lower conservation constraints.

Zinc hardware within 5 miles of the coast. Corrodes within 2-3 years. Specify stainless steel or brass from the start.
Stain over paint on a sea-facing elevation. Stain offers roughly half the protection of microporous paint against salt-air exposure. Paint. Always.
Standard sealed units on exposed Downs positions. Upgrade to argon-filled for better thermal performance on hilltop or windswept sites.
Not checking which council covers you. West Sussex has Chichester DC, Arun DC, Horsham DC, plus the South Downs National Park Authority. A property on the edge of Chichester might fall under multiple jurisdictions.

Frequently Asked Questions
–
+
Which timber suits coastal West Sussex best?
Meranti hardwood — naturally moisture-resistant. With microporous paint and stainless steel hardware, it handles salt-air environments well. Engineered pine also performs with proper finish specification.
How does salt air affect timber windows?
Salt doesn’t attack timber directly — it attacks the paint film. Salt crystals hold moisture against the surface, breaking down the paint bond over time. Our microporous system (120μm dry film thickness) allows moisture vapour to escape rather than becoming trapped.
Which council handles planning in West Sussex?
Three district councils (Chichester, Arun, Horsham) plus the South Downs National Park Authority. Your property might fall under one or more. Check your postcode on each council’s planning portal.
What should I budget for Georgian sash windows in Chichester?
A typical Georgian townhouse with 8-12 sash windows costs £5,000-£9,000+VAT in engineered pine with double glazing.
Is Brighton in West Sussex?
No — Brighton is in East Sussex (Brighton & Hove City Council). See our East Sussex page for Brighton-specific guidance.
