Why oak

Why Solid Oak Windows Are the Premium Choice

Oak has been the benchmark for quality joinery for centuries. European oak is dense, with a tight grain that keeps the frame dimensionally stable through Britain’s wet winters and dry summers, and its natural tannins give it built-in resistance to decay and insects. Fixings hold firmly, mortise and tenon joints stay tight, and frames keep their finish longer than softer timbers.

The result is a window built to last for generations: with sensible maintenance, solid oak windows have a service life of around 50 years, compared with 25–35 years for engineered pine and 35–45 years for engineered meranti. The initial cost is higher, but spread over that lifespan the economics start to make sense — especially on the elevations people see.

Solid vs engineered

Solid Oak Window Frames vs Veneered Alternatives

The difference between solid oak and “oak” matters more than many suppliers admit. Our oak frames are machined from solid European oak, so the timber is oak all the way through the profile. Scratches and dents can be sanded out and the frame refinished many times over its life.

Cheaper alternatives often use a softwood core with an oak facing. They can perform adequately, but once you sand through the facing during maintenance you expose the softwood underneath, and veneers can delaminate with age. For something as permanent as your windows, we think solid oak is worth it.

Styles

Oak Sash and Casement Windows

Every oak window is made to your measurements, in the style that suits your property:

  • Oak sash windows on weights — traditional box sashes with cords, pulleys and weights, the authentic choice for Georgian and Victorian homes. See sash windows on weights.
  • Oak sash windows on springs — the same sliding sash look with a slimmer frame and spiral balances instead of weights.
  • Oak flush casement windows — sashes that sit flush with the frame for a clean, cottage-style look.
  • Georgian oak windows — sash or casement with solid, duplex or applied glazing bars. Compare bar types in our Georgian windows guide.

Oak frame windows suit everything from period terraces and country cottages to oak-framed new builds and extensions, where the frames can match exposed oak beams and joinery.

Finishes

Light Oak, Dark Oak and Painted Oak Windows

Natural European oak ranges from light honey to deeper amber. Left completely untreated outdoors it weathers to a silvery grey, so every window we supply is factory finished. You can show the grain or cover it:

Real oak or oak-effect? “Oak coloured windows” in uPVC are a printed foil over plastic. A solid oak window is real timber: it can be repaired, sanded and refinished, it feels and ages like wood, and it suits period properties where uPVC is often not acceptable.

Glazing & performance

Double Glazed Oak Windows

All our oak windows are double glazed as standard, with low-E glass, argon fill and warm-edge spacers. Standard units achieve a whole-window U-value of 1.4 W/m²K, meeting Part L of the Building Regulations for replacement windows.

Upgrades include triple glazing (typically 25–35% more per window), acoustic glass for noisy streets (about £100–150 per window) and slim double-glazed units for solid glazing bars (around 1.6–1.8 W/m²K). Read more in our energy efficient timber windows and double glazed wooden windows guides.

Costs

How Much Do Oak Windows Cost?

Our solid oak windows start from £799+VAT for a sash window on weights, with most oak windows between £799 and £1,299+VAT depending on size, style and specification. Oak costs more than pine or meranti because the timber itself is more expensive and its density means slower machining and more careful joinery.

What moves the price: overall size, sash or casement, Georgian bars (solid bars add about £100–200 per window), glazing upgrades, finish and ironmongery. On larger projects some customers use oak on the front elevation and meranti or pine at the sides and rear to manage the budget.

All prices are supply only and exclude VAT and delivery. Full price list: timber windows prices.

Period & listed homes

Oak Windows for Period and Listed Properties

Oak connects to centuries of British joinery. For listed buildings and conservation areas, officers usually expect replacements to match the original material intention: oak or hardwood where the originals were hardwood, with traditional profiles and glazing bars. Where the originals were painted softwood, engineered pine is often accepted. Our guide to windows for listed buildings covers consent, glazing bars and slim double glazing.

Care

Oak Window Maintenance

Oak’s reputation for low maintenance is deserved, though low does not mean none. Inspect external finishes every couple of years: the oak itself resists rot, but oils, stains and paints break down under UV and weather. Natural oil finishes typically need refreshing every 3–4 years depending on exposure — clean, lightly sand if needed and re-oil.

Hardware also stays secure for longer in dense oak: hinge screws do not work loose and sash pulleys wear less, so oak windows need fewer adjustments over their working life. More tips in our timber window maintenance guide.

Oak Windows FAQ

Are solid oak windows worth it?

–

+

For many homes, yes. Solid oak is dense, stable and naturally decay-resistant, lasts around 50 years with sensible maintenance and can be sanded and refinished many times. It costs more upfront than pine or meranti, but the cost per year of service is competitive.

How much do oak windows cost?

–

+

Our solid oak windows start from £799+VAT for a sash window on weights, with most between £799 and £1,299+VAT depending on size, style, glazing and finish. Send your sizes for an exact quote within 48 hours.

How long do oak windows last?

–

+

Around 50 years with regular finish maintenance, compared with 25–35 years for engineered pine and 35–45 years for engineered meranti.

Can I have light oak or dark oak windows?

–

+

Yes. Choose a clear finish for natural light oak with the grain on show, a light, golden or dark oak stain, or paint in any RAL or Farrow & Ball colour.

Are your oak windows solid or engineered?

–

+

Our oak windows are made from solid European oak — oak throughout the profile, not a veneer over a softwood core. Our pine and meranti windows use 3-layer engineered timber.

Are oak windows double glazed?

–

+

Yes. All our oak windows are double glazed as standard with low-E glass, argon and warm-edge spacers (U-value 1.4 W/m²K). Triple and acoustic glazing are available.

Do you install oak windows?

–

+

No. We are supply only: we manufacture, finish and deliver UK-wide, and your own joiner or builder fits the windows.
