What Are Flush Casement Windows?
A casement window is hinged at the side and opens outwards like a door. On a flush casement, the opening sash closes into the frame so that sash and frame finish on the same plane. From outside you see slim, even sightlines with no stepped edges — the look of traditional English timber joinery, and the reason timber flush casement windows suit cottages, Georgian and Victorian houses, conservation areas and contemporary extensions alike.
On a storm-proof casement the sash overlaps the outside of the frame, which leaves a visible step around each opening. Every window in our casement range is flush.
Different Types of Timber Casement Windows
Casement windows are described by how they open and how the frame is divided:
- Side-hung casements — hinged at the side and opening outwards; the classic choice for most homes.
- Flush or storm-proof — flush sashes sit level with the frame; storm-proof sashes overlap it.
- Single, double and triple — one, two or three lights side by side, often combined with fixed panes.
- Georgian casements — divided by glazing bars into smaller panes for a period look.
- Tilt-and-turn — a modern opening option we also make to order.

Traditional and Georgian Casement Windows
Flush casements are the traditional window of English cottages and many period houses. Our Georgian casement windows add glazing bars for the multi-pane look of 18th- and early 19th-century façades. Softwood or Hardwood Casement Windows?
