Hampshire covers more ground than most people realise — from the medieval streets of Winchester in the north to the dockyards of Portsmouth on the coast, with the entire New Forest National Park in between. A Georgian townhouse on Winchester’s College Street has nothing in common with a thatched New Forest cottage or a Victorian terrace in Southsea. But all three need timber windows, and all three need them made properly.

Winchester has one of England’s most extensive conservation areas — covering not just the Cathedral Close but much of the city centre, the streets running down to the river, and the residential areas around St Cross and Kingsgate. Winchester City Council manages the conservation controls, and they take them seriously.

The architecture is predominantly Georgian, with some medieval survivals and Victorian infill. Georgian sash windows are the standard: six-over-six patterns, slim glazing bars (15-18mm), tall proportions. The limestone and red brick of Winchester’s buildings respond well to both painted timber (white or off-white) and natural oak — though the conservation area typically expects painted finishes matching the existing streetscape.

One Winchester-specific detail: many properties on the High Street and in The Close have very deep reveals — 130-160mm — because of the thickness of the original stone walls. These deep reveals actually make window installation easier (more tolerance for frame positioning) but they need to be measured accurately at four points because stone walls are rarely perfectly parallel.

The New Forest National Park Authority is a separate planning body from the district councils. If your property falls within the National Park boundary — and the boundary isn’t always where you’d expect — you need to satisfy the Park Authority, not just your local council.

New Forest properties are characterised by cottage architecture: small casement windows, sometimes with leaded lights, set in thick cob or brick walls. The palette is earth tones — not bright white. The Park Authority prefers heritage colours that blend with the landscape: muted greens, creams, greys, or natural timber finishes.

Oak is particularly popular in the New Forest. The silver-grey weathering of untreated oak sits naturally against the thatched roofs and aged brick that define the area. The coastal cities have different requirements from inland Hampshire. Victorian and Edwardian terraces dominate residential areas — Portswood in Southampton, Southsea in Portsmouth, Alverstoke in Gosport. Sash windows are the standard replacement for these properties.

Salt-air exposure applies to any property within a few miles of the Solent. The same considerations as our West Sussex coastal guidance apply here: microporous paint rather than stain, stainless steel or brass hardware rather than zinc, and annual visual checks on south-facing elevations. Meranti hardwood is worth the premium for sea-facing windows — its natural oil content provides an extra barrier against moisture penetration.

Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard conservation area has particularly strict controls. Properties near the Dockyard may face additional scrutiny from Historic England alongside the city council.

Standard hardware within 3 miles of the Solent. Zinc-plated fittings corrode fast in salt air. Specify stainless steel or brass from the start — replacing corroded hardware after 2 years costs more than specifying the right hardware upfront.
