Timber Windows in Wiltshire

+

Wiltshire is one of those counties where the wrong windows don’t just look bad — they get rejected. By planning officers, by conservation teams, sometimes by the neighbours. Between the limestone cottages around Castle Combe that need slim timber frames to sit properly in deep stone reveals, and the Victorian terraces in Trowbridge where the sash proportions have to match the rest of the terrace, this county demands precision.

Every window we deliver to Wiltshire is manufactured to your exact spec — engineered pine, meranti, or oak. Three-coat microporous finish. Factory conditions. No site installation from us; that’s your joiner’s domain.

Before You Order: A Checklist for Wiltshire Properties

+

Five things to nail down before comparing prices or choosing colours:

1. Conservation area status. Wiltshire has more than you’d think — Salisbury, Devizes, Marlborough, Bradford-on-Avon, Corsham, Lacock, and many more. Check Wiltshire Council’s planning portal (wiltshire.gov.uk). If you’re inside one, timber matching originals is expected.
2. Measure your reveals. The depth of the wall opening. Victorian terraces in Trowbridge: 100-115mm. Stone cottages near Lacock or Castle Combe: 150mm+. This determines which frame profile we manufacture.
3. Listed building status. Grade I and II need Listed Building Consent before you touch the windows — separate from planning permission.
4. Decide on glazing. Single for listed buildings. Double for most properties. Triple for exposed positions on Salisbury Plain. This affects frame depth and price — decide before quoting.
5. Find your joiner. We’re supply-only. Book a local joiner 2-3 months ahead — especially spring through autumn.

The Technical Bit — What’s Inside These Windows

+

Here’s something most window websites skip. Our engineered pine uses Scandinavian redwood — slow-grown, tight grain, around 8-12 growth rings per inch. That density matters. Fast-grown pine has wide rings, more sapwood, and absorbs moisture like a sponge.

The timber arrives at 12% moisture content ±2% — the sweet spot for stability. The finger joints are cut at 10mm pitch and bonded with D4-rated polyurethane adhesive (EN 204 — highest exterior durability class). The joints are actually stronger than the surrounding timber.

Our paint system is three-coat microporous: primer, undercoat, topcoat. Total dry film thickness: approximately 120 microns. Microporous means moisture vapour passes outward through the film rather than getting trapped underneath — which is what causes blistering and rot on conventionally painted windows. With basic maintenance, repainting interval: 8-10 years.

Area Guide

Salisbury

Multiple conservation areas including the Cathedral Close and wider city centre. Georgian townhouses and Victorian terraces. Sash windows dominate. Wiltshire Council (Salisbury area) manages planning.

Devizes, Marlborough, Bradford-on-Avon

Market towns with strong conservation controls. Georgian and early Victorian architecture. Glazing bar accuracy matters in these areas.

Corsham, Lacock, Castle Combe

Stone cottage territory. Deep reveals. Small, non-standard window openings. Oak weathers beautifully against Wiltshire stone. Made-to-measure is essential.

Trowbridge, Chippenham, Calne

More mixed stock — Victorian terraces, inter-war housing, modern developments. Sash for the Victorian stock, casement for later periods.

Wiltshire-Specific Mistakes

+

Ordering double glazing for a listed stone cottage without checking consent. Grade II listed stone cottages in the Corsham/Lacock area may require single glazing to match originals. Get consent FIRST.
Measuring from inside on a stone property. Stone walls taper — wider outside than inside. If you measure from your living room, you’ll get a figure 10-20mm too small. Measure from outside at multiple points. Send us the smallest.
Choosing the cheapest timber. Budget softwood has wide grain, low density, high moisture absorption. Within 5 years: swelling, sticking, paint failure. Our engineered pine costs more because it performs for decades.
Painting oak. If you’re paying for oak, let it be oak — the grain, the colour, the silver-grey weathering. For a painted finish, engineered pine takes paint beautifully and costs significantly less.
Ignoring the paint system specification. Conventional gloss traps moisture. Microporous lets timber breathe. On an exposed Wiltshire property — especially near Salisbury Plain — the difference is a 3-year repaint cycle versus 10 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

+

Do Wiltshire conservation areas require timber windows?

In most cases yes — Salisbury, Bradford-on-Avon, Corsham, Lacock, Devizes and others all expect timber matching originals. Check wiltshire.gov.uk for your specific property.

What timber suits Wiltshire stone cottages?

Oak if you want natural timber visible against stone (weathers to silver-grey). Engineered pine for painted finishes — stable, cost-effective, 60+ year lifespan.

How do I measure windows on a stone wall property?

Measure from OUTSIDE at multiple points — stone walls taper, so inside measurements are typically 10-20mm smaller than the actual opening. Send us the smallest measurement at each point.

What’s the cost for timber sash windows on a Salisbury terrace?

A typical terrace with 6-10 sash windows: £4,000-£8,000+VAT in engineered pine with double glazing.

How often do timber windows need repainting?

With our microporous factory-applied system: 8-10 years on exposed elevations, 12+ on sheltered sides. Conventional gloss needs repainting every 3-5 years — the microporous system lets timber breathe, preventing the blistering that causes premature paint failure.
