Planning in Gloucester
Do You Need Planning Permission for New Windows in Gloucester?
Most Gloucester houses don’t. The exceptions are St Michael’s Square and part of the Southgate Street conservation area, where Article 4 directions mean that changing windows on a front facing a road or open space needs planning permission.
Gloucester City Council has 14 adopted conservation areas and an interactive map that shows which one, if any, your home is in. A conservation area on its own doesn’t take away a house’s permitted development rights for windows.
The council’s Article 4 direction page lists the two directions. The St Michael’s Square direction, in force since 2006, covers the houses in the Square and 19–26 Brunswick Road, and it sets an approved paint palette for window frames. The Southgate Street direction, confirmed in 2014, covers named houses in Albion Street, Somerset Place, Southgate Street and Stroud Road. Flats and commercial buildings need permission for new windows anyway.
| Your home | What you usually need | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| House, not listed, no Article 4 | No planning permission if the new windows look similar | Planning Portal guide for houses |
| Flat or maisonette | Planning permission | Your local council |
| House under an Article 4 direction | Planning permission | Article 4 map, then your council |
| Listed building | Listed building consent | National Heritage List for England |
If the house is listed, any change to the windows needs listed building consent. Check the address on Historic England’s National Heritage List for England. Applying is free, the council has 8 weeks to decide, and replacing windows without consent is a criminal offence. We supply profile drawings and material specifications for the application, and our page on replacing windows in listed buildings covers the rest.
Get the approval first, then order to the approved drawings. Ordering first and applying later is how people end up with windows the council won’t accept. Building regulations still apply to a full replacement; our standard double glazed windows have a whole-window U-value of 1.4 W/m²K, which meets Part L for replacement windows in England.
Delivery
Delivery to Gloucester: Lead Time, Cost and Fitting
Each order is made in about 20 working days from order confirmation and deposit, then delivered to your Gloucester address. Delivery is charged separately and shown on your quote.
We deliver across the city: the centre and the Docks, Kingsholm, Barnwood, Hucclecote, Tuffley, Quedgeley and the streets in between. For Cheltenham, Stroud and the Cotswolds, see our page on timber windows in Gloucestershire.
We don’t install. The windows arrive factory-finished and double glazed, and your own joiner or builder fits them. Your fitter will want the sizes right first time, so read how to measure wooden windows for replacement before you send them over.
Payment is simple: a 50% deposit books production and the other 50% is due on delivery, by bank transfer. Larger orders may qualify for free delivery.
Gloucester project
Timber Windows We’ve Made for a Gloucester Home
For a brick house with a weatherboarded gable in Gloucester, we made white four-pane timber windows, factory-finished and double glazed as standard.
Glazing bars are where window prices differ most. Solid through-bars, with each pane separately sealed, are the most authentic and add £100–200 per window over applied bars; duplex bars are the most popular middle ground. Our page on Georgian style windows shows the bar types side by side.
If you live in St Michael’s Square, tell us the colour from the council’s approved palette. We factory-finish in any RAL or Farrow & Ball colour, so a shade from either range is straightforward. More finished jobs are in our project gallery.
Timber and prices
Which Timber Suits a Gloucester Home, and What Does It Cost?
Engineered pine starts at £449+VAT per window and lasts 25–35 years when maintained. Meranti costs about 20–30% more and lasts 35–45 years. Solid European oak costs £799–1,299+VAT and lasts around 50 years.
| Timber | Construction | Service life (maintained) | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scandinavian pine | 3-layer engineered | 25–35 years | From £449+VAT | Painted windows on sheltered walls |
| Dark Red meranti | 3-layer engineered hardwood | 35–45 years | About 20–30% more than pine | Exposed walls |
| European oak | Solid | Around 50 years | £799–1,299+VAT | Grain on show, clear or stained |
Our pine and meranti windows are engineered timber: three layers bonded together, which keeps the sections straight. For painted windows on a typical city house, engineered pine does the job and keeps the cost down. Meranti is worth the extra on walls that take the weather, and solid oak windows are for those who want the grain on show.
For period sashes, our timber sash windows on weights are balanced individually: each sash is weighed after glazing and the weights matched to it. Meranti and oak are compared on our hardwood windows page, and every upgrade price is under timber window prices.
