One vertical bar on each sash

A slim astragal bar runs down the centre of both the top and bottom sash. Cords, pulleys and weights

Each sash hangs on cords that run over pulleys at the top of the frame to counterweights hidden inside the box. The weights balance the sash, so it slides easily and stays where you leave it: top sash down to let warm air out, bottom sash up for fresh air. Pine and meranti frames are engineered, laminated in layers so they stay straight and the sashes keep running freely through wet winters and dry summers; oak frames are solid European oak. What does 2 over 2 mean on a sash window?

It counts the panes: two in the top sash and two in the bottom, created by one vertical glazing bar on each sash. A Georgian 6 over 6 has six panes per sash, and a 1 over 1 has no bars at all.
