About this Georgian box sash window

This is a Georgian box sash window on traditional cords and weights, with a full grid of astragal bars giving six panes in each sash – the 6 over 6 pattern of eighteenth-century townhouses. It is made to your measurements in engineered pine, engineered meranti or solid European oak and delivered fully finished across the UK, from £649+VAT.

The 6 over 6 bar grid

Slim timber bars run across and down each sash, splitting it into three panes wide and two high. Behind the bars sits a sealed double-glazed unit, so the window keeps its Georgian proportions without the heat loss of old single glazing. The grid is set out to the size of each window, so a row of them across the front of the house reads as one consistent façade. If your house was built with a single centre bar rather than a grid, the 2 over 2 timber sash window is the closer match. For bar patterns and proportions in more depth, read our Georgian sash windows guide.

A genuine box sash on weights

Counterweights hidden in the box frame balance each sash on cords and pulleys, so both slide smoothly and hold at any height. It is the historically correct mechanism for a Georgian house. Pine and meranti frames are engineered, laminated so they stay straight and the sashes keep running freely year after year; oak frames are solid European oak. Where the wall is too shallow for a box frame, the same bar grid is available as a Georgian sash window on hidden springs.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a sash window Georgian?

The grid of glazing bars. A Georgian sash is divided into several small panes – most often six per sash – rather than one sheet of glass. This window reproduces that layout with slim timber bars over modern sealed glazing, so the period look comes with current thermal performance.

Should I choose weights or springs for a Georgian sash?

Weights are the historically correct choice and the one to go for where authenticity matters most. If your wall depth is limited or you want a slimmer frame, the springs version keeps the same bar grid.

Can I use these in a listed building or conservation area?

They are made for that kind of house, but the decision sits with your local planning authority, so check before you order. We make windows to the drawings and specification you have had approved, including single glazing where it is required. Our page on replacement timber windows for listed buildings explains the usual requirements.

How long do they take to make?

Around 20 working days from your deposit, then they are delivered fully finished to your address anywhere in the UK.
