Planning in Wimbledon
Do You Need Planning Permission for New Windows in Wimbledon?
Check first: Wimbledon has seven conservation areas of its own. Merton Council lists Wimbledon Broadway, Wimbledon Chase, Wimbledon Hill Road, Wimbledon North, Wimbledon Village, Wimbledon West and Wimbledon Windmill.
They are part of Merton’s 29 conservation areas, and Merton Council handles planning for all of them. For the rest of the borough, including the Merton Park Article 4 areas, see our page on timber windows in Merton.
A conservation area on its own doesn’t take away a house’s permitted development rights for windows; an Article 4 direction does, and flats have no such rights. The government’s Article 4 direction dataset maps directions by council, though it warns the data isn’t complete.
| Your home | What you usually need | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| House, not listed, no Article 4 | No planning permission if the new windows look similar | Planning Portal guide for houses |
| Flat or maisonette | Planning permission | Your local council |
| House under an Article 4 direction | Planning permission | Article 4 map, then your council |
| Listed building | Listed building consent | National Heritage List for England |
If the house is listed, any change to the windows needs listed building consent. Check the address on Historic England’s National Heritage List for England. Applying is free, the council has 8 weeks to decide, and replacing windows without consent is a criminal offence. We supply profile drawings and material specifications for the application, and our page on replacing windows in listed buildings covers the rest.
Get the approval first, then order to the approved drawings. Ordering first and applying later is how people end up with windows the council won’t accept. Building regulations still apply to a full replacement; our standard double glazed windows have a whole-window U-value of 1.4 W/m²K, which meets Part L for replacement windows in England.
Delivery
Delivery to Wimbledon: Lead Time, Cost and Fitting
Each order is made in about 20 working days from order confirmation and deposit, then delivered to your Wimbledon address. Delivery is charged separately and shown on your quote.
We deliver across Wimbledon: the Village, Wimbledon Park, Wimbledon Hill, the Broadway, Wimbledon Chase and the streets in between. Larger orders may qualify for free delivery.
We don’t install. The windows arrive factory-finished and double glazed, and your own joiner or builder fits them. Your fitter will want the sizes right first time, so read how to measure wooden windows for replacement before you send them over.
Payment is simple: a 50% deposit books production and the other 50% is due on delivery, by bank transfer. Next door? See our pages for timber windows in Wandsworth and timber windows in Kingston.
Sash windows
Sash Windows in Wimbledon: Weights or Springs?
Both start at £449+VAT and both are double glazed as standard. Weights are the traditional choice for a period house; springs sit hidden in the frame instead of weights in a box.
Our timber sash windows on weights are balanced individually: each sash is weighed after glazing and the weights matched to it. Sash windows on hidden springs start at the same price, and box sashes in the Georgian pattern from £649+VAT on weights.
In a conservation area, the council may want the traditional detail. Our guide to Victorian sash windows covers horns, bars and proportions.
Hardwood and prices
Hardwood or Softwood Windows in Wimbledon, and What Do They Cost?
Engineered pine starts at £449+VAT per window and lasts 25–35 years when maintained. Meranti costs about 20–30% more and lasts 35–45 years. Solid European oak costs £799–1,299+VAT and lasts around 50 years.
| Timber | Construction | Service life (maintained) | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scandinavian pine | 3-layer engineered | 25–35 years | From £449+VAT | Painted windows on sheltered walls |
| Dark Red meranti | 3-layer engineered hardwood | 35–45 years | About 20–30% more than pine | Exposed walls |
| European oak | Solid | Around 50 years | £799–1,299+VAT | Grain on show, clear or stained |
Our hardwood option is engineered Dark Red meranti: it costs about 20–30% more than pine and lasts 35–45 years when maintained. It is worth it on exposed elevations. For painted windows on sheltered walls, engineered pine does the job.
If you want the grain on show, solid oak windows are the choice, at £799–1,299+VAT. Meranti and oak are compared on our hardwood windows page, and every upgrade price is under timber window prices.

Our Best-Selling Timber Windows:
Timber Windows in Wimbledon: FAQ
Are hardwood windows worth it in Wimbledon?
–
+
On exposed elevations, yes. Our hardwood windows are engineered Dark Red meranti: about 20–30% more than pine, and they last 35–45 years when maintained, against 25–35 for pine. For painted windows on sheltered walls, engineered pine is usually enough. Solid oak costs £799–1,299+VAT.
Which conservation areas are in Wimbledon?
–
+
Merton Council lists seven with the Wimbledon name: Wimbledon Broadway, Wimbledon Chase, Wimbledon Hill Road, Wimbledon North, Wimbledon Village, Wimbledon West and Wimbledon Windmill. Being in one doesn’t by itself stop a like-for-like replacement on a house; an Article 4 direction or listing would.
Do you install timber windows in Wimbledon?
–
+
No. We are supply only: we make the windows to your sizes, factory-finish and double glaze them, and deliver them to your Wimbledon address. Your own joiner or builder fits them. If you haven’t got a fitter yet, line one up before you order so they can check the openings and the sizes.
How much does delivery to Wimbledon cost?
–
+
Delivery is charged separately and shown on your quote, so you see the full cost before you pay the deposit. Larger orders may qualify for free delivery. Windows are made in about 20 working days from order confirmation and deposit, and the balance is paid on delivery by bank transfer.
Should I choose sash windows on weights or on springs in Wimbledon?
–
+
Both start at £449+VAT and both are double glazed as standard. Weights are the traditional choice and what a conservation officer is most likely to expect on a period house. Springs sit hidden in the frame. If your area is under an Article 4 direction or the house is listed, check what the council wants before you order.
