Planning in Merton

Do You Need Planning Permission for New Windows in Merton?

Most houses don’t. The exception to watch is Merton Park: the John Innes Merton Park and Wilton Crescent conservation areas are covered by Article 4 directions, the first made in 1986, which remove some permitted development rights. Check what they cover with the council before you change windows there.

Merton Council lists 29 conservation areas, from Cricket Green in Mitcham to Upper Morden. Seven of them carry the Wimbledon name, and our page on timber windows in Wimbledon covers those.

Outside an Article 4 area, a house keeps its permitted development rights for windows; flats don’t have them. The government’s Article 4 direction dataset maps directions by council, though it warns the data isn’t complete.

Listed buildingListed building consentNational Heritage List for England

If the house is listed, any change to the windows needs listed building consent. Check the address on Historic England’s National Heritage List for England. Applying is free, the council has 8 weeks to decide, and replacing windows without consent is a criminal offence. We supply profile drawings and material specifications for the application, and our page on replacing windows in listed buildings covers the rest.

Get the approval first, then order to the approved drawings. Ordering first and applying later is how people end up with windows the council won’t accept. Building regulations still apply to a full replacement; our standard double glazed windows have a whole-window U-value of 1.4 W/m²K, which meets Part L for replacement windows in England.

Delivery

Delivery to Merton: Lead Time, Cost and Fitting

Each order is made in about 20 working days from order confirmation and deposit, then delivered to your Merton address. Delivery is charged separately and shown on your quote.

We deliver across the borough: Mitcham, Morden, Merton Park, Raynes Park, Colliers Wood, South Wimbledon and the streets in between. Larger orders may qualify for free delivery.

We don’t install. The windows arrive factory-finished and double glazed, and your own joiner or builder fits them. Your fitter will want the sizes right first time, so read how to measure wooden windows for replacement before you send them over.

Payment is simple: a 50% deposit books production and the other 50% is due on delivery, by bank transfer. Next door? See our pages for timber windows in Wandsworth and timber windows in London.

Sash or casement

Sash or Casement Windows for a Merton Home?

Match what the house was built with. Sash windows slide vertically and suit most Victorian and Edwardian houses; flush casements open on hinges and suit cottages, inter-war houses and newer homes. Both start at £449+VAT.

Our timber sash windows on weights are balanced individually: each sash is weighed after glazing and the weights matched to it. Timber flush casement windows start at £449+VAT for a single and £599+VAT for a double.

In Merton Park, check with the council first, because the Article 4 directions there remove some permitted development rights. Send photos of the existing windows with your sizes and we’ll quote for the same layout of glazing bars. See finished jobs in our project gallery.

Timber and prices

Which Timber Suits a Merton Home, and What Does It Cost?

Engineered pine starts at £449+VAT per window and lasts 25–35 years when maintained. Meranti costs about 20–30% more and lasts 35–45 years. Solid European oak costs £799–1,299+VAT and lasts around 50 years.

European oakSolidAround 50 years£799–1,299+VATGrain on show, clear or stained

Engineered pine is the sensible choice for painted windows. Meranti, our hardwood option, is worth the extra on exposed elevations.

If you want the grain on show, solid oak windows are the choice; painting oak means paying for grain nobody sees. Meranti and oak are compared on our hardwood windows page, and every upgrade price is under timber window prices.
