Timber Windows in Hounslow

Hounslow is a borough of three identities. Chiswick in the east has some of West London’s most desirable Victorian and Edwardian houses, where sash windows aren’t just preferred but practically required. Brentford and Isleworth are in the middle of a regeneration wave — new builds alongside period properties. And further west, approaching Heathrow, the main window requirement shifts from heritage accuracy to acoustic survival.
We make timber windows for all three identities. Built to measure in pine, meranti, or oak. Factory-finished with a three-coat microporous system. Delivered. You handle the fitting side.
Chiswick vs Brentford — Different Homes, Different Windows

+
Chiswick is premium. Victorian and Edwardian properties along Chiswick Mall, Strand-on-the-Green (conservation area), Bedford Park (often called the first garden suburb), and the streets off the High Road. Windows here need to be period-accurate: sash windows with correct proportions, appropriate glazing bar widths, horn details. Hounslow Council’s conservation team pays close attention to Chiswick applications. This is double-glazed sash territory, similar in spec requirements to neighbouring Richmond.
Brentford is changing fast. The High Street regeneration, new riverside developments, and conversions of former industrial buildings are creating demand for both period-style windows (on the remaining Victorian terraces) and contemporary casement windows for new builds. Flush casement timber windows suit the modern properties — clean lines, good thermal performance, the natural warmth that aluminium and uPVC lack.
Isleworth falls between — some Victorian and Georgian properties (especially around Syon Park and the riverside), plus inter-war and post-war housing further north.
The Heathrow Factor — When Sound Matters More Than Style
–
+
If your Hounslow property is under the flight path — and a significant portion of the borough is — glazing specification matters more than anything else.
Here are the numbers. Aircraft on final approach to Heathrow pass over Hounslow at approximately 300m altitude. At that distance, a landing aircraft produces around 80-85 dB at ground level. During peak hours, flights pass every 90 seconds.
Standard double glazing (two identical 4mm panes, 16mm air cavity) reduces external noise by approximately 25-30 dB. That takes 85 dB down to 55-60 dB inside your house. Noticeable. Liveable. But you’ll still hear every plane.
Asymmetric how double and triple glazing works glazing — three panes of different thicknesses (e.g., 6mm + 4mm + 4mm) with two cavities, one argon-filled — reduces noise by 35-40 dB. That takes 85 dB down to 45-50 dB. Genuinely quiet. You’ll know a plane is there if you’re listening, but conversation, sleep, and concentration are unaffected.
Why asymmetric? Because identical panes resonate at the same frequency — sound waves that get through one pane also get through the other. Different thicknesses resonate at different frequencies, so sound that passes through one pane is blocked by the next.
Timber frames add further acoustic benefit. Wood’s cellular structure absorbs vibration naturally — it’s a better sound damper than the rigid aluminium or hollow uPVC used in competing products. The combination of timber frame + asymmetric triple glazing is the most effective acoustic solution available for residential windows.
We don’t push triple on every Hounslow order. In Chiswick Village, standard double is fine. But for properties within 2-3km of the runway, it’s worth the 15% price premium.

Hounslow Mistakes

Standard double glazing under the flight path. If you can hear aircraft from inside with windows closed, standard double won’t solve it. Specify asymmetric triple for aircraft-facing elevations at minimum.
Choosing heritage spec for a 1960s Brentford flat. Period window details (horns, glazing bars, weighted sashes) belong on period properties. A 1960s flat needs flush casements — clean, modern, efficient. Getting the era right matters.
Ignoring Strand-on-the-Green conservation area. One of Hounslow’s most protected areas. Timber is mandatory; proportions must match originals. Check before ordering.
Assuming Chiswick = Hounslow in identity. Chiswick homeowners often identify more with Richmond or Hammersmith than Hounslow. But for planning purposes, it IS Hounslow Council. File your applications accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions
–
+
Does triple glazing help with Heathrow aircraft noise?
Yes — asymmetric triple glazing reduces external noise by 35-40 dB versus 25-30 dB for standard double. For properties under the flight path, this is the difference between hearing every plane and barely noticing them.
What window type suits Chiswick period properties?
Timber sash windows with correct proportions for the era. Chiswick has predominantly Victorian and Edwardian properties where sash windows are expected, particularly in conservation areas like Bedford Park and Strand-on-the-Green.
What’s the price premium for Heathrow acoustic triple glazing?
Approximately 15% more than standard double glazing. For a typical Hounslow property, that’s £500-£1,500 extra for the flight-path-facing elevations.
Is Chiswick managed by Hounslow Council for planning?
Yes — despite Chiswick’s identity feeling closer to Richmond or Hammersmith, all planning applications go through Hounslow Council at hounslow.gov.uk.
What windows suit new Brentford riverside developments?
Flush casement windows in timber — clean contemporary profile with natural warmth. Modern locking, double or triple glazing. From £449+VAT.
