If you’re replacing windows on an Oxford property, timber isn’t just preferred. In much of the city, it’s required.

North Oxford (Bardwell Road, Norham Gardens, Park Town) — large Victorian villas, 12-16 tall sash windows. The North Oxford Victorian Suburb conservation area has a detailed character appraisal specifying window types and proportions.
Jericho (Walton Street, Jericho Street, Canal Street) — smaller Victorian terraces, 5-8 compact sash windows. Tighter reveals than North Oxford. Separate conservation area.
Summertown — Edwardian and inter-war properties. Wider sash proportions. Mixed casement/sash on some streets.
East Oxford / Cowley — Victorian terraces, some with shallow reveals. The most affordable area for timber window projects.
Iffley — protected village within the city. Strict conservation. Deep stone reveals (150mm+). Casement and sash mix.

Reveal depth varies more across Oxford than most cities:

Our sash frames need minimum 70mm. Casement frames: 60mm. Both fit all Oxford property types — but the margin matters. On a Jericho terrace with 85mm reveals, there’s only 15mm spare. Measure from outside at head, cill, and both jambs. Send us the tightest figure.

If the reveal is too shallow, the window protrudes from the wall face — wrong visually and catches weather. If too deep, internal finishing is more complex. The measurement takes five minutes and prevents expensive problems.

Sash — the default for Oxford’s Victorian and Edwardian stock. Part L compliant.
Casement — for Iffley cottages and rear elevations.
Georgian — for properties near the city centre and Park Town.

Mixing up North Oxford and Jericho proportions. North Oxford sashes: 700-800mm wide, 1600-1800mm tall. Jericho: 600-700mm wide, 1200-1400mm tall. Both Victorian — but noticeably different proportions.
Ordering without the character appraisal. Oxford’s major conservation areas have published character appraisals — download from oxford.gov.uk before specifying.
Assuming Article 4 status. Some Oxford conservation areas have Article 4 directions. The Central Conservation Area does. Not all do. Check your specific zone.
Forgetting the staircase landing window. Oxford’s larger Victorian houses have an oversized window on the half-landing — often the most visible from the street. Measure it separately.
