Every window we make is built to the sizes you send us. Nothing comes off a shelf in standard widths. This guide follows a made to measure timber window from your tape measure to the pallet on your drive, and explains where made to measure actually makes a difference and where it does not.
If you want prices first, our timber window cost guide covers budgets, and this page covers the process.

What Does Made to Measure Mean?
It means the frame is built to fit your opening, not the other way round. The width and height come from your measurements, and the rest is chosen for that window:
- Style: sash on weights, sash on hidden springs or flush casement.
- Timber: engineered Scandinavian pine, engineered Dark Red meranti or solid European oak.
- Glazing bars: none, applied, duplex or solid through-bars for a Georgian look.
- Colour: any RAL or Farrow & Ball colour, or a clear or stained finish on oak.
Openings in older houses are rarely square or a standard size. A window made to the opening needs packing, not cutting back the brickwork or filling a wide gap with trim.
Who Measures the Windows?
You or your joiner. We supply windows only, so the sizes come from you. The method is simple: measure each opening in several places, note the smallest figure and send it with a photo of the window from inside and outside.
Our step-by-step guide on how to measure wooden windows for replacement shows where to put the tape and what fitting tolerance to allow.
From Sizes to a Quote in 48 Hours
Send the sizes, photos and your choice of style and timber, and we come back with a detailed quote within 48 hours. Prices are shown excluding VAT, and the delivery charge for your postcode is on the quote.
Prices start at £449+VAT for a sash window or a single flush casement in engineered pine. Meranti costs about 20–30% more than pine, and solid oak windows are £799–1,299+VAT each. The full list is on our timber windows prices page.
How a Made to Measure Window Is Made
Once the order is confirmed, the window goes through the same stages every time.
- Timber. Pine and meranti are three-layer engineered sections, glued with the grain running in opposite directions so they stay straight. Oak is solid.
- Treatment. The timber is vacuum impregnated with preservative before it is machined, so the protection goes into the wood, not just onto the surface.
- Machining and assembly. Frames and sashes are cut to your sizes. Sills are sloped and have a drip groove underneath, so rain runs off and away from the wall.
- Glazing. Every window is double glazed as standard with low-E glass, argon fill and warm-edge spacers. The whole window reaches a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K, which meets Part L for replacement windows in England.
- Balancing (sash windows on weights). Each sash is weighed after glazing and its weights are matched to it, so it stays where you leave it.
- Finishing. A multi-coat microporous finish is applied in spray booths, in the colour you chose. The windows arrive finished, with no painting on site.
How Long Do Made to Measure Windows Take?
About 20 working days from order confirmation and deposit. We take a 50% deposit to book production and the other 50% on delivery, by bank transfer.
Delivery and Fitting
We deliver across the UK. Delivery costs £80–120 within 50 miles of our manufacturing base and £200–350 to the Scottish Highlands and other remote areas. Larger orders may qualify for free delivery, and the charge is always shown on the quote.
We do not install. Your own joiner or builder fits the windows, which keeps the price down and lets you use someone local you trust.
Is Made to Measure Worth It?
Not always. If you are fitting a window into a new, standard-sized opening and have no style to match, a stock window can do the job.
Made to measure earns its keep in three situations: older houses with openings that are out of square or an odd size, houses where the new windows must match the old ones, and listed buildings, where we supply profile drawings and material specifications for the listed building consent application. More on that is on our page about windows for listed buildings.
A window made for its opening also lasts. Every window carries a 5-year warranty. We have had windows back after 10 years for a reglaze, and the frame was still true when we checked it with a straight edge.
