Clear glass, no bars

Each sash holds one sealed double-glazed unit, so nothing interrupts the view and the room gets as much daylight as the opening allows. The glass is quicker to clean, too. How the spring balances work

A coiled spiral spring sits in a tube hidden in each side of the frame, and each sash is balanced for the weight of its glazing. It holds the sash steady wherever you stop it: top sash down to let warm air out, bottom sash up for fresh air. With no cords, pulleys or weights, the frame needs no hollow box, which keeps the sightlines narrow. What does 1 over 1 mean on a sash window?

One pane in the top sash and one in the bottom, with no glazing bars. It is the plainest sash pattern and lets in the most light.

Are spring balances as good as weights?

They do the same job in a different way. Springs need no weight box, so the frame is slimmer and fits shallower openings.
