Timber Windows in Hampshire
–
+
Hampshire covers more ground than most people realise — from the medieval streets of Winchester in the north to the dockyards of Portsmouth on the coast, with the entire New Forest National Park in between. A Georgian townhouse on Winchester’s College Street has nothing in common with a thatched New Forest cottage or a Victorian terrace in Southsea. But all three need timber windows, and all three need them made properly.
We build timber windows to order for Hampshire properties. Pine for painted finishes, our meranti timber guide explains why hardwood suits coastal properties, and oak for visible natural timber on New Forest and Test Valley buildings.
Winchester — Cathedral City Conservation
–
+
Winchester has one of England’s most extensive conservation areas — covering not just the Cathedral Close but much of the city centre, the streets running down to the river, and the residential areas around St Cross and Kingsgate. Winchester City Council manages the conservation controls, and they take them seriously.
The architecture is predominantly Georgian, with some medieval survivals and Victorian infill. Georgian sash windows are the standard: six-over-six patterns, slim glazing bars (15-18mm), tall proportions. The limestone and red brick of Winchester’s buildings respond well to both painted timber (white or off-white) and natural oak — though the conservation area typically expects painted finishes matching the existing streetscape.
One Winchester-specific detail: many properties on the High Street and in The Close have very deep reveals — 130-160mm — because of the thickness of the original stone walls. These deep reveals actually make window installation easier (more tolerance for frame positioning) but they need to be measured accurately at four points because stone walls are rarely perfectly parallel.
The New Forest — National Park Requirements
–
+
The New Forest National Park Authority is a separate planning body from the district councils. If your property falls within the National Park boundary — and the boundary isn’t always where you’d expect — you need to satisfy the Park Authority, not just your local council.
New Forest properties are characterised by cottage architecture: small casement windows, sometimes with leaded lights, set in thick cob or brick walls. The palette is earth tones — not bright white. The Park Authority prefers heritage colours that blend with the landscape: muted greens, creams, greys, or natural timber finishes.
Oak is particularly popular in the New Forest. The silver-grey weathering of untreated oak sits naturally against the thatched roofs and aged brick that define the area. We supply oak casement windows specifically sized for the non-standard openings you’ll find in Forest cottages — openings that haven’t been square since the cottage was built three hundred years ago.
Southampton, Portsmouth, and the Coastal Strip
–
+
The coastal cities have different requirements from inland Hampshire. Victorian and Edwardian terraces dominate residential areas — Portswood in Southampton, Southsea in Portsmouth, Alverstoke in Gosport. Sash windows are the standard replacement for these properties.
Salt-air exposure applies to any property within a few miles of the Solent. The same considerations as our West Sussex coastal guidance apply here: microporous paint rather than stain, stainless steel or brass hardware rather than zinc, and annual visual checks on south-facing elevations. Meranti hardwood is worth the premium for sea-facing windows — its natural oil content provides an extra barrier against moisture penetration.
Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard conservation area has particularly strict controls. Properties near the Dockyard may face additional scrutiny from Historic England alongside the city council.
Pricing Across Hampshire
–
+
Hampshire’s property variety means a single price estimate is misleading. Here’s an honest breakdown:
| Area | Typical Property | Approx Total (+VAT) |
|---|---|---|
| Winchester Georgian | 8-12 sash | £5,500–£10,000 |
| New Forest cottage | 5-8 casement | £3,000–£6,500 |
| Southampton Victorian | 6-10 sash | £4,000–£8,000 |
| Portsmouth terrace | 6-8 sash | £3,500–£6,500 |
Individual windows from £449+VAT. All estimates in engineered pine — add 20-30% for meranti, 40-60% for oak.
Hampshire Mistakes
–
+
Contacting the wrong planning authority for New Forest properties. If you’re within the National Park boundary, the Park Authority handles planning — not your district council. Check which body covers your property before submitting applications.
Bright white paint on a New Forest cottage. The Park Authority favours heritage tones that blend with the landscape. Bright white stands out. Cream, muted green, or natural oak are safer choices.
Ignoring Winchester’s deep stone reveals. Measure at four points — stone walls taper and curve. The difference between the widest and narrowest measurement can be 15-20mm.
Standard hardware within 3 miles of the Solent. Zinc-plated fittings corrode fast in salt air. Specify stainless steel or brass from the start — replacing corroded hardware after 2 years costs more than specifying the right hardware upfront.

Frequently Asked Questions
–
+
Does the New Forest National Park require timber windows?
The Park Authority doesn’t mandate timber in all cases, but it strongly prefers natural materials that respect the landscape. Timber with heritage colours is the safest choice. uPVC is unlikely to gain approval in most conservation areas within the Park.
Which council handles planning in Hampshire?
Hampshire has multiple district councils (Winchester, East Hampshire, Test Valley, Basingstoke, New Forest, Eastleigh, Fareham, Gosport, Havant, Hart, Rushmoor) plus Portsmouth and Southampton as unitary authorities and the New Forest National Park Authority. Check your specific district.
What timber suits New Forest cottages?
Oak — it weathers to silver-grey which suits the Forest’s natural palette. For painted finishes, engineered pine with heritage colours. Avoid bright white.
How much do timber windows cost for a Winchester Georgian property?
A typical Winchester Georgian townhouse with 8-12 sash windows: £5,500-£10,000+VAT in engineered pine with double glazing. Deep stone reveals don’t add cost but do require careful measurement.
Is salt air a problem for Hampshire coastal properties?
Within a few miles of the Solent, yes. Specify microporous paint (not stain) and stainless steel hardware. Meranti hardwood provides extra natural moisture resistance for sea-facing elevations.
